Formula
Total = Bill + (Bill × Tip%) + (Bill × Tax%)
Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People
Tip and sales tax are both calculated as a percentage of the original bill amount (before tip and tax are added), then summed with the original bill to get the total.
Worked Example
Splitting an $85 dinner bill between 2 people in New York
- Bill amount: $85.00
- Tip: 18% → $15.30
- NY sales tax: 8.875% → $7.54
- Total bill: $85.00 + $15.30 + $7.54 = $107.84
- Split between 2 people: $53.92 each
